Antidepressants. What are they and how do they work? I’ve had patients ask me if these medications will make them feel happy all the time or like a different person. The answer is no. They don’t make or force you to do anything. They just allow you to feel the things you normally would without depression.
Imagine you are in a dark room and the only way out is through a door. On the other side of that door is the human experience. Good, bad, everything. Just the ability to feel it. Depression is like a lock on that door. It is your body’s neurotransmitters not working properly to allow you to experience, desire, and interact with your life. Some people don’t have a lock on that door. These people do not have clinical depression. They may ask you why you don’t just open your door and go outside. Your door may have a lock on it. That’s clinical depression.
Antidepressants are like a key for that lock depression puts on the door to your life. They let you open the door but will not force you outside or change anything about how you choose to live. The right one can help you. It will never control you. It just gives you back control.
