Updated: Oct 23, 2023

Semaglutide can be provided in many ways such as a pen, vial and empty syringe, or prefilled syringe. The following videos will show you how to prepare the medication (if needed) and inject it.

Brand name semaglutide pen (Ozempic or Wegovy):

Compounded syringe:

General instructions on drawing up any medication and injecting subcutaneously. Pay close attention to your specific dosing plan.

Written version:

Draw the medication:

1. Remove the vial top and wipe with alcohol wipe

2. Remove the cap to the needle.

3. Hold the syringe like a pen and draw back the plunger to the specified dose line such as 0.5 mL, put the needle into the vial top ensuring the tip is in the liquid.

4. Push the air into the vial, then withdraw the plunger again to fill with medication back to the dose line.

5. Remove the needle from the vial.

Inject the medication:

1. Use an alcohol wipe about 2-3 inches away from your belly button on your abdomen, start from the center and work the wipe out in a circular motion about 1 inch radius.

2. Pinch the area up between two fingers to form a fold to inject into, pinching skin and fat tissue, avoid bunching up any muscle with it.

3. Inject at a 90 degree or 45 degree angle (45 degree if fat pad not very thick) into the spot and push down on the plunger to put the medication in.

4. Withdraw the needle, place in a sharps container, and store your medication vial in a refrigerator for future use.

The volume of medication and small needle size make this a relatively painless and bloodless injection.
